I began this project by considering different types of environments and the environment as a whole. My goal was to investigate nature and how the current generation appears to have no real understanding of how beautiful nature really is and how beautiful the world around them is.
My research focused on the beauty of the natural world, especially the shapes and different types of organisms that I consider to be beautiful and often overlooked in daily life and modern society.
I then delved down the rabbit hole of researching fantasy worlds and fairy tales because most fairy tales are rooted in the natural world. Fairy tales such as Alice in Wonderland and many others were key inspirations. In addition to this, I also examined fairy stories in particular. Being British myself, I grew up with a deep love and appreciation for fairies. They form an influential part of British culture, and I did not realize until I moved here that the lore of fairies had its origins in England. Due to my British heritage, I assumed that fairy tales were the same throughout the world. However, the most prevalent and widespread belief of fairies is within the United Kingdom and England.
My design concept reflects my love of the natural world and my desire to make something that expresses my feelings towards nature and the natural world. This is in keeping with the feeling I have toward it. In particular, I am referring to my love of fantasy, fairies, childhood, and the feeling of being a child. The world around you is so much more meaningful when you are a child. We enjoyed playing in the garden and being surrounded by nature so much. It was like a fantasy world. This is why I found it especially interesting to research Alice in Wonderland. This is because it considerably romanticizes and illuminates the British countryside as a sort of Wonderland. In order to relate to that, I wanted to create designs that are reminiscent of childhood and make you feel very nostalgic for that sense of wonder towards nature. Additionally, I want to use a lot of organic shapes and lines to evoke and imitate visuals and emotions pulled from this sort of fantastical British Wonderland of nature.
