'Dys-Morphia' originated from a series of expressive observational digital drawings I did when visiting the Catacombs in Paris.
I really like the idea of taking something like a skull, which has associations of death and darkness, and turning it into a bright and colourful piece. I devolved my initial drawings using photoshop to create multiple alternate compositions, with an emphasis on keeping structural elements of the skull visible and recognisable. I used embroidery to further develop these outcomes and experiment with textile media and how it can add tactility and dimension.
I then created a piece of wearable art using my digitally abstracted skulls. I focused on conveying feelings surrounding themes of body image and mortality. I wanted to make a comment on the fragility and short nature of human life.
