I created 'Indicator Species' whilst studying Fine Art at Sixth Form. I wanted to create a piece that is both physically and visibly overwhelming which is why I worked on such a large scale (
A1 or 23.4 x 33.1 in).
I was inspired by organic form and nature with an interest in air pollution as an underlying theme within this piece. The descending gradient from airy cream tones to smoggy browns comments on climate change and the effects of pollution on the environment. I was particularly inspired by moss and lichen and how lichen can be used as an ‘indicator species’ to measure levels of air pollution.
